What Are Invisalign Attachments and What Are They For?

If you’re considering Invisalign in Rancho Penasquitos, Poway, Carmel Valley or Carmel Mountain Ranch, Invisalign attachments may be a part of your treatment. At Carmel Mountain Dental Care, Dr. H. Jonathan Lee will assess your dental health during your consultation to determine whether you will need attachments throughout your treatment.

What Are Invisalign Attachments, and How Do They Work?

Invisalign attachments are built out of the same resin that’s used for dental bonding, and are often referred to as “buttons.” They are placed on certain locations of your teeth by your dentist to create anchor points in order to help provide extra grip for the aligners.

The process is simple and uses a mold supplied by Invisalign. Your teeth are cleaned, buffed and the resin is applied and hardened using a UV light. The Invisalign attachments may vary in shape and size, depending on your particular needs. They may be round, square, rectangular or even shaped like a triangle or ellipse.

These attachments allow orthodontists to correct issues like crooked teeth or misalignment more effectively, and can also serve as an anchor for the use of rubber bands.

When the treatment is finished, the attachments are removed, and the seamless appearance of your natural teeth is restored.

What Are Invisalign Attachments For?

Depending on your teeth and your particular needs, attachments may be necessary because some types of orthodontic issues can’t be treated with Invisalign aligners alone.

Essentially, Invisalign attachments are used in any situation when the aligner alone cannot provide enough force to rotate a tooth. For example, over-rotated teeth, or teeth that need to be extruded (brought above) the gum line may need Invisalign attachments to help apply force more effectively.

Will I Need Invisalign Attachments?

This depends on the condition of your teeth, and your desired goals. While many patients don’t need to use attachments during Invisalign treatment, you may need to have several applied if your teeth are crooked. To determine whether you need attachments, one of our dentists will administer an oral exam and develop a treatment plan that will work best for you.
