The Most Frequently-Asked Questions About Teething: Answered!

As a new parent, you have a lot on your mind. From changing diapers, to regular pediatrician visits, sleepless nights spent by the crib; it’s a lot to take on. And one of the biggest stressors when it comes to infanthood is getting through the teething process.

At Carmel Mountain Dental Care, our pediatric dentists get a lot of questions from new parents about teething. Here are some answers to a few of the most common FAQs to give you more insight into the teething process, and what it means for your infant:

When Should Teething Start?

Teething usually begins between 4-7 months of age. However, it’s not unheard of for infants to begin teething when they are as young as 2 months, or nearly a year old. Genetics is a big factor. Some families have earlier teething periods, and some have later teething periods.

When Should I Start Brushing My Child’s Teeth?

As soon as the first baby tooth appears. Use a small, soft-bristled baby toothbrush and a grain-of-rice-sized amount of non-fluoride toothpaste to brush the tooth after each time your baby breastfeeds. You should also wipe down their gums with a clean cloth. At the age of 2, you can switch to a fluoridated toothpaste.

When Should I See A Pediatric Dentist For The First Time?

As soon as your child has a tooth! Seeing a pediatric dentist such as Dr. Lee as early as possible has a number of benefits. You can get advice about the teething process, track your child’s teething progression, and ask any questions you may have about oral hygiene and care for infants.

Whether you’re in Rancho Peñasquitos, 4S Ranch, or Del Sur, come in for a visit and see one of our dentists as soon as your child’s first tooth erupts. We’re always taking new patients!

How Long Does Teething Take?

Most children will have their full set of primary (baby) teeth by 24 months. Again, though, this may vary slightly based on when your child’s first tooth erupted.

Is Teething Always Painful?

Teething is mostly symptomless, except for when the tooth is erupting through the gumline. This is when discomfort, drooling, and crying tend to occur. As your child becomes older, they will get more used to this discomfort, and they will tend to show fewer negative symptoms of teething.

How Can I Relieve Pain From Teething?

Discomfort is inevitable, but nobody likes to see their child in pain. There are a few home remedies you can use to relieve pain, such as:

  • Gentle gum massages
  • Soft rubber, plastic, and plush teething toys
  • Cool washcloths applied to the area where your child is teething

Medication can be given to your child, but this should only be done when recommended by your dentist or pediatrician.
