How to Stay Calm in a Dental Emergency – Our Top Tips

A dental emergency can be scary. Whether you pull out a filling or crown, crack or chip a tooth due to an oral injury, or even have an unexpected toothache, you may not know what to do, or how to stay calm.

In this guide from Carmel Mountain Dental Care, we’ll give you the tips you need to stay calm, get the right treatment for your emergency, and restore your smile. Whether you’re in 4S Ranch, Del Sur, Carmel Valley, or Poway, you can make sure you get the care you need with these tips.

1. Be Prepared With a Dental Emergency Kit

It’s a good idea to have a dental emergency kit ready in case of an oral injury or other emergencies. This kit should contain:

  • Sterile gauze to absorb blood
  • Non-aspirin pain relievers (aspirin can interfere with blood clotting)
  • Disposable rubber or plastic gloves
  • A small, sealable container to hold a knocked-out tooth or pulled-out dental work

You can keep this kit at home, and also keep one in your car or at your office. Make sure your family knows where it is so that they can use it in case of an emergency.

2. Contact Carmel Mountain Dental Care ASAP For an Appointment

As soon as you experience an oral injury or dental emergency, contact the team at Carmel Mountain Dental Care. We’ll set you up with a same-day appointment to make sure you can get the care you need.

3. Assess the Severity of Your Dental Injury or Emergency

We know that a dental injury or emergency can be extremely painful and scary. But there’s good news. Dental injuries are rarely life-threatening. You should only go to the ER if you have an issue like:

  • A cracked or dislocated jaw
  • Serious oral swelling that is interfering with your breathing or swallowing
  • Severe cuts and lacerations to the face and mouth

If you are not experiencing these issues, your issue is not life-threatening. You can remain calm, and know that you’ll get the appropriate treatment from our doctors as soon as possible!

4. Treat Bleeding, Pain, and Discomfort Until You Can See One of Our Doctors

If you have time before your appointment, you can use clean gauze to absorb blood from your mouth. Non-aspirin pain relievers can also be used to help with discomfort, and you can apply an ice pack to your cheek externally to help with swelling and pain.

5. Come in for Your Appointment as Soon as You Can!

The sooner you get emergency dental care, the sooner we can restore your smile, and the more likely we are to be able to save your teeth and restore your smile. So don’t wait. Prioritize coming to Carmel Mountain Dental care to make sure you get the care you need.
