Benefits of dental veneers

Dental veneers have been used for decades to transform smiles using minimally invasive treatment. Because they are relatively simple to place and can last decades with proper care, many patients enjoy veneers for their numerous satisfying benefits. Here are just a few that you'll enjoy!

Minimally Invasive

Receiving dental veneers requires minimal preparation of the enamel. This makes room for the veneers without causing discomfort for the patient.

Stain Proof

Veneers are typically made of porcelain, which does not stain. This means once your veneers are placed, you'll always have a bright, beautiful smile.

With proper care, veneers can last decades, often upwards of 20 years for some patients. This cosmetic solution is a true investment.

"I have been a patient at CMDC for 3 years now. This place is truly a gem and I will not go anywhere else! I have seen multiple hygienists and two different dentists, they have all treated me with the best care, respect and great service. I have a lot of sensitivity, they keep that in mind and are gentle. They truly go above and beyond for their patients and I no longer dread the dentist! Thank you!"

Porcelain Veneers Frequently Asked Questions

Because no patient is the same, porcelain veneers may be used to provide various types of cosmetic improvements for each smile. The first step is a consultation with our team at Carmel Mountain Dental Care to determine what treatment is right for you. But feel free to read our most commonly asked questions before your appointment in Rancho Peñasquitos.

What are veneers?

Veneers are natural looking, wafer-thin shells of porcelain that fit seamlessly over the surface of the teeth to improve the shape, size or color of each tooth. These versatile dental solutions are commonly used for the following reasons:

  • Misshapen or broken tooth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Discoloration and yellowing
  • Teeth worn from teeth grinding or bruxism
How are veneers applied?

The entire veneers process typically requires as little as one or two appointments. When you first come in, we will perform a comprehensive dental exam to review your oral health and discuss your medical history. The veneers process requires the use of little or no anesthesia before removing a thin layer of enamel to make room for the new veneer. This is generally a painless process and is followed with making an impression of your teeth. After choosing the optimal color, shape and size of your new veneer, it is crafted, adjusted, and polished before being secured into place.

What can I expect after receiving veneers?

After placement, patients with a good dental hygiene routine can expect for their veneers to last anywhere from 7 to 20 years on average. Although veneers are strong, it is important not to use your teeth as “tools” to bite into non-food items like fingernails, pens, or ice. After receiving veneers, we recommend that patients brush and floss regularly and come into our Rancho Peñasquitos office every six months as they normally would for regular checkups.

How long do veneers last

Veneers usually last between 10-20 years. The longevity and lifespan of your veneers mostly depend on how well you care for your teeth. We recommend brushing and flossing consistently and seeing the team at Carmel Mountain Dental Care to ensure your veneers and teeth remain healthy.

You may also want to take a few other steps to avoid damaging or dislodging your veneers. We recommend that you stop chewing non-food objects including erasers, fingernails, pens, and other such things. This can put stress and strain on your veneers. Similarly, don’t use your veneers to rip tape, open packages, or for anything other than chewing and eating food.

When eating food, you also should chew very hard foods like almonds or popcorn kernels with your rear teeth. Try to avoid biting into them with your front teeth and veneers, since this could damage them.

It’s also a good idea to get an athletic mouthguard if you participate in any kind of contact sport like football, soccer, lacrosse, basketball, or combat sports. This will protect both your veneers and your natural teeth from injuries.

are veneers permanent

Yes. The veneer treatment process is permanent and irreversible. If you choose to get veneers, you will need to keep your veneers for the rest of your life. This is because a thin layer of enamel has to be removed from each tooth that gets a veneer.

This enamel layer must be removed to make sure your veneers fit properly and bond to your teeth. And once your veneers are in place, your smile will be just as strong as it was before your teeth were trimmed.

But if you ever have your veneers removed, your teeth will be a lot weaker. They will be more susceptible to decay and will not look natural. Veneers are a treatment that you should only get if you are certain that they’re right for you.

If you don’t like the idea of permanent, irreversible treatment, an alternative cosmetic dental service like dental bonding may be right for you. Bonding can also help treat issues like stained teeth, gaps in the smile, misshapen teeth, and chipped teeth, but doesn’t require any enamel removal.

what happens if I damage a veneer

This depends on the extent of the damage. Most of the time, the damage will only affect the veneer itself. For example, this could happen if you bite down on a piece of hard food and the veneer cracks, or if you are hit in the face due to an accident and the veneer is dislodged.

If this happens, the veneer will likely need to be replaced, unless it’s just been knocked loose and has not been permanently damaged.

However, if the damage extends below the veneer and includes your natural tooth structure, replacing or repairing the veneer may not be an option. This depends on the extent of the damage. If your tooth is only slightly damaged, it may be possible to simply build and attach a new veneer.

But if the tooth is cracked or the damage is more extensive, you will probably need to get a different treatment, such as a dental crown. This will cover up and repair your tooth, and prevent further complications like a tooth infection.

Regardless of the situation, you should come into Carmel Mountain Dental Care right away to discuss your options with our dental team if you’ve damaged or dislodged one of your porcelain veneers. Prompt treatment will always result in the best possible outcome for your dental emergency.
